What I'm Trying to DoMy Aims and Values
I am trying to transmit, as a trainer, as a teacher, as a colleague, as a citizen and as a parent the importance of the Scientific and Rational Thinking and of a free and calm approach to reality, including social, political, economic and human issues, from a general to an everyday level, within a framework of a value system where the weakest stands in the first place and where the reference values are solidarity, equity, freedom and participation.I think all this is important in our contemporaneity, when the irrational, the violence, the craziness, the avidity, the limitless exploitation of natural resources and the exploitation of men, women and children by new forms of slavery is too often considered as unavoidable and when the acceptance of behaviour codes that invade and corrode all the levels and all the sides of our collective and personal life as well as every economical, social, personal and collective relationship, is passed as pragmatism.Furthermore I feel that all this is more than cogent and totally non-renounceable in these years when we are becoming more and more aware, with growing clarity and less and less uncertainty, about how the environmental problems are accelerating, hitting mainly the most vulnerable subjects, communities, social groups and populations and amplifying already intolerable inequalities.I look with concern at the future and at those who are inescapably sliding into poverty and from poverty into misery, along a path of increasing exclusion from a life with dignity and along a steep road of growing erosion of rights.Even more concern comes from seeing how people are forced to migrate from the Southern World where they cannot even survive.
It is within this framework of values and feelings that I have tried and am trying to work, from 1988 to 1993, as a teacher and a trainer of working and learning groups of teachers of the primary school, on identifying, communicating and learning the meaningful contents of methods, of disciplines and of the Scientific Thinking; from 1994 to 2002 as a teacher and a trainer in seminars and extra-curricular courses on Statistics and Experimental Methodology at the Faculty of Agricultural Science of Florence; from 2002/3 as assistant professor and from 2006/7 as entitled professor of official University courses on General and Inorganic Chemistry (Faculty of Agricultural Science of Florence ) and on Environmental Chemistry and Environmental themes (Faculty of Economy of Florence). My research activity is on quality and safety of agri-food products and of the environment.
